PRT

There seems to be a new surge in interest in Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) here in Seattle. Or, at the very least, there’s a new whisper campaign aimed at generating a new surge in interest. See here.

The video’s pretty slick, but it still seems like pure fantasy to me. For one, how do you convince people to build hundreds of miles of new, concrete elevated guideways throughout the city, blocking views and precious sunlight? People freaked out when the monorail proposed a scant 14 miles of guideway (in a city that has 3,745 lane miles of road). One would assume that a PRT system would have a 100 miles or so of such guideways.
